A little bit of history

Supported Housing Inc

Supported Housing began operation in 1989 after the closure of the Willow Court Complex in New Norfolk. The closure of Willow Court came as a result of the process of deinstitutionalisation and involved the re-settlement of residents into the community, typically into shared group homes. Supported Housing began with two such group homes in Howrah. Since that time the organisation evolved significantly and prior to the 2009 merger, was responsible for 6 sites.

Star Tasmania Inc

Star Tasmania was formed in July 1994, with two sites in Claremont and Montrose. These were transferred from the Disability Services accommodation program. In September of the same year, a third site was opened in Kingston. A steady expansion saw Star grow to four sites prior to merging with Supported Housing in July 2009.

Tranquility Base

Tranquility Base (TAS) Ltd was founded in 1996 in St Johns Avenue, New Town by Pat and Clem Meehan.

Established initially to support their daughter, the Meehans grew the organisation to support another female resident six months later and moved to the current site in Austins Ferry.

Prominent in the deinstitutionalisation movement in Tasmania, Pat and Clem Meehan remained the Directors of Tranquility Base until their retirement on the 1st December 2009 when the organisation merged with STAR Tasmania.

The site is now known as Tranqullity House.
